180-degree rule

Also called axis of action

Keeping the camera on one side of an imaginary line between two characters so their screen directions stay consistent.

Keeping the camera on one side of an imaginary line between two characters so their screen directions stay consistent.

If the camera crosses the line, a character who was looking right suddenly looks left, and the audience loses its sense of space. Directors sometimes break the rule on purpose to unsettle the viewer.
